Africa Day falls on 25th May each year. It is an initiative of the African Union, and aims to celebrate African diversity and success and the cultural and economic potential of the continent. In Ireland, events to mark Africa Day are supported by Irish Aid, the Government’s programme for overseas development.
Ireland has developed strong connections with Africa over many years, not least those forged by Irish missionaries and non-governmental organisations. More recently, we have seen an increase in trade and business links, while many African communities here are making an invaluable contribution to Irish society.Marie McIntyre spoke with event co-ordinator Gerry Mulkerrins.

After emigrating to Germany to find work during the 1980s, Eoin made a new life for himself with the help of his wife Frieda and son Dieter. He returned to Ireland at the height of the boom, and just in time for the bust - “where Dorset Street has become so posh that all the women have turned blonde … and the girls buying John Player Blue at Hardwick Street flats have a different pair of pyjamas to wear to the shops everyday”.Marie McIntyre spoke with Ray Yeates who plays Eoin in this one man play.

She has been involved in research and teaching with the Health Promotion Department since 2002. Siobhan is a Sexual Health Promoter working with schools and other groups since 1990. As well as teaching and research within the University Siobhán facilitates 'Flirting, Dating & Relating’ workshops as part of the "Mind Body & Soul' programme run by Student Services in NUI, Galway as well as having developed and facilitating the training of volunteers for the WILL U? health promotion peer outreach programme. Siobhán is also a lay member on Mental Health Tribunals for the Mental Health Commission.

She is currently pursuing a PhD in Positive Sexual Health with a scholarship from the Office of the Minister of Children.

...your campus may have turned into a bit of a building site. All of the ongoing work looks very impressive, and we can't wait to see the finished products!

First off (and above) there's the renovated Bialann, due to open on Monday 6th of September.

Then the Engineering building begins to look really impressive...

The new concourse entrance is fresh and modern, and you no longer have to dash outdoors in the rain to go to the Bialann.

They're doing something to the north end of the concourse (which means you can't drive but can walk through), and between the library and Áras de Brún.

And last but not least, they've been revamping The Hub in Áras na MacLéinn, and the reception of the Students' Union. Phew.

Galway project could be Ireland’s favourite building

There are less than two days for the Galway Public to go online and vote for Ireland’s favourite building. A Galway architecture project is among the 55 projects on the shortlist for this year’s Irish Architecture Awards, which was recently announced by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI).

Sliabh Ban Housing, Gleann Ban, Galway was designed by DTA Architects and was completed last year. Now in its third year, the very popular Public Choice Award gives the public the opportunity to have their say by voting for their favourite shortlisted building. The RIAI invites the public to vote for their choice online here. Voting closes at noon on Friday, 18th June 2010.
